In our world of social media, shopping hauls, food crazes and Netflix, it has been apparent for many, especially for myself that staying focused can sometimes be a challenge. If you are anything like me and always tend to have a number of different activities, work, or initiatives happening all at once, it would definitely be very helpful to have a good idea of how to manage your time well and stay Focused. That said, this blog will cover my 5 Top Tips on how to Stay Focused and ultimately Achieve Success!
1. Have a Checklist and know your priorities
When I say, have a checklist, I literally mean take a pen and write down what you need to do. Sure, you can add it to your phone or tablet, but having something on your mobile device or computer is yet another possible distraction. Thus, we want to avoid that and so, I say, let us do it the old fashion way by using paper and a pen!
This is also a very good way to visualize what ranks at the top of your most important task to complete down to the least important. Sharing from experience, it always feels great to get the most difficult job done first so that the rest can be smooth sailing! Once you begin to check off your to-do list keep that momentum going and stay engaged!
2. Create a positive learning environment and remove all distractions
If you are one to study best in cafes or do your work in a public area, then go to that place. But for someone like me, I would need to go to a quiet environment like a library or study room in order to get my creative juices going. Create a positive space where you know you can work your best and take away all distractions. And when I say distractions I mean turn off your phone if possible or place it somewhere like your bag where it cannot be visibly distracting. If you have the urge to check your Facebook or Instagram feed, think again. Social media can definitely wait and will still be there by the time you complete your work.
3. Clear your mind and communicate your problems
For myself, if I have an issue with someone or if I am thinking about something that happened at work I cannot focus properly on certain tasks and I find this to be a major problem. When you are faced with a dilemma, talk it out with someone – do not leave it to the last minute – and try to resolve it. The more you communicate and express your concerns, the easier it will be to move forward and accomplish your tasks in the long run. Keep in mind your end goals understand why you are doing what you are doing.
4. Share your goals with others
I always say that it is important to share your accomplishments and goals with others who support you. Make your friends, family, and even coworkers aware that you may need some time to focus on your work on a specific day or time of day. This way, they can be cognizant next time they think of asking you to come out for lunch or watch a movie at the theatre. They will respect your time and this will help you stay attentive to what you need to do without any distractions from other people.
5. Eat healthy and take breaks
Finally, this is my favourite advice of all! This is all about self-care and to me, at the end of the day every person needs to ensure that even through all the piles of work they need to complete, it is essential to take a break and breathe. Trust me, especially during my university years, I had times where I had to re-read chapters in my textbook because I decided not to take any breaks. This prevented me from fully absorbing all the information initially. So do yourself a favour and also save time by stopping and doing something completely different from your to-do’s every now and then for about 15 minutes. Clear your mind, do not skip a meal, try to eat healthy and get back to work when you are ready to hustle again!
